Il faut comprendre que le sud du pays possède une forte concentration de gorille. La forêt dans laquelle nous travaillons est une forêt "ancestrale" et traditionnellement utilisée par les populations locales pour leurs activités coutumières. Les ressources de la forêt sont très utiles : médecine traditionnelle, artisanat, ustensiles divers, source de protéine, bois de chauffe, bois de construction, etc.
On voit donc que la forêt est utile et exploitée par nos deux espèces : l'homme et les grands singes. Par conséquent notre objectif est de trouver un consensus afin qu'il n'y ait pas de conflit d'intérêt : valorisation économique de ce patrimoine (écotourisme), connaissance sur les grands singes, sensibilisation sur les échanges de maladies, éducation environnementale, etc. Nous partons du principe que ces deux espèces peuvent cohabiter.
Concernant les touristes, nous ne sommes pas encore au stade où un impact négatif pourrait exister. A vrai dire, notre objectif premier est de mettre en place les bases de l'écotourisme et de préparer cette activité pour l'avenir. Par contre les risque et menaces liés à la proximité physique de l'homme et des grands singes sont pris en compte dans nos stratégies et notre méthodologie : distance de sécurité, vaccinations obligatoires, port de masque, contrôle sanitaire, etc.
